Walkathon 2026

The top class for week 1 will be announced on Monday September 21st. Please continue collecting pledges and help us reach our goal of $29,000.00.

Mass Challenge:
This term we are encouraging all SFA families to remain rooted in their faith by attending 7:45 am Daily Mass.  SFA students are encouraged to attend 7:45 am Mass on the following dates this term:

• Wednesday, September 23, 2026
• Wednesday, October 14, 2026 and,
• Wednesday, November 25, 2026

Please note that students may be dropped off and an SFA staff member will walk back with them to the school after Mass is complete.  Those who attend all 3 “Mass Challenges” will get a treat!

School Uniform: 
Requirements of the school uniform:

• SHOES:  students are permitted to wear black shoes or all-black runners. Shoes must be entirely black, including soles, laces, and logos, with no visible markings or colours. 
• SOCKS:  Girls are permitted to wear navy blue knee high socks/tights in the Winter and Boys are permitted to wear navy blue socks ; Boys and Girls are permitted to wear navy ankle-socks or navy knee high socks with the Summer Uniform
• PANTS:  pants are to be kept in good condition (no holes/frays)
• KILT/SKORT:  to be worn no higher than 2 inches above the knee
• MAKE-UP: Girls may wear only clear nail polish or lip balm. No other nail polish or make-up is permitted.

OnVolunteer Portal: 
Just a note that the OnVolunteer portal has gone through a refresh over the summer. Some of the user spaces are a bit easier to use, but unfortunately this has wiped our data. Jeremy – thank you!!- is working to upload parent names and I’m re-inputting activities. It is taking longer than anticipated.

We hope to have this done in the next week or so and I will send out a new ‘how to’ guide in the next couple of weeks. As some parents are asking about tracking hours could we include something like the following in today’s school  email?

Parent Participation – OnVolunteer Update
A note to parent volunteers, our tracking portal, OnVolunteer has  gone through a system upgrade and will be online shortly. We anticipate instructions and sign in information to be shared with everyone in the next couple of weeks. Until then, please keep track of your hours manually. A New School Year Begins: 

Welcome back SFA families!  The 2026-2027 school year will begin in less than a week’s time and our SFA staff are busily preparing for the return of your children. This summer we replaced more of the old flooring in the school and progress was made on obtaining the permit for our gym. Side panelling has been put in and in a few weeks time flooring will be installed.

If you are able, please join us on Tuesday, September 8 (Grades 1-7; Kindergarten students start the following day) at 8:40 am on the playground area for a welcome and blessing from Father Lucca. Students will line up behind their class marker on the playground between the school and the gym.

You are also encouraged to join us our SFA BBQ on September 11, 2026.

Outdoor Concert
Dear Grade 4, 5, 6 and 7 Parents,

Once again our former music teacher and accomplished solo artist, Tami Comuzzi, is hosting an outdoor concert at the St. Francis Church Garden on July 18 after the 5:00 pm Mass. This is a beautiful evening with fun music in an amazing setting. All proceeds will go to the parish.

Mrs. Comuzzi is looking for at least 10 choir students or more who can sing in tune and would like to join Mrs. Comuzzi in a song at this concert.  Mrs. Comuzzi has chosen the popular World Cup song:  “Wavin’ Flag” by the Canadian artist K’Naan.

Important dates to note:

1.  Tuesday, June 23, 2026 after school practice (from 3:00 pm – 4:00 pm) – practice at the school

2.  Monday, July 13, 2026 from 4:00 pm – 5:30 pm  – practice in the parish hall 

3.  Saturday, July 18, 2026 from 3:00 pm – 3:30 pm (sound check – in the parish garden) and 6:00 pm (showtime in the parish garden)

School Supplies Collection June 16th to 19th
Please send in your extra school supplies next week. We will be collecting school supplies, such as crayons, pencils, sharpeners, and scissors, that are still in good condition. The goal is to collect these extra supplies, clean and organize them into kits, and donate them to students who would benefit from them.
Catherine Bukowski is a former SFA student. Catherine started this last year and was very successful in helping many children. This is a great way for Children to help other Children.

Great Grandview Garage Sale
The Great Grandview Garage Sale is happening on Saturday, June 20 from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM. We are currently looking for volunteers to help with setup of tables and tents, food and beverage service, and end-of-day cleanup and takedown.

Looking to clear out some items or showcase your small business? Tables are available to rent for $25 for anyone interested in selling their goods at the event.

Bollywood
This week in our PE classes an instructor will come in to teach the students Bollywood Dancing. We hope this will provide some cultural and educational experiences for them as well as extra fun. On Friday, June 12, 2026 each grade will be performing their Bollywood Dances in the church hall. 

All children should dress in RED in honour of Canada playing in the FIFA World Cup on Friday, June 12th.

Bike to School Week
We’ve had a very successful Bike to School Week with many students biking, rolling and walking. We encourage all students to continue biking throughout the school year. Prizes were awarded today to the primary and intermediate students. 

Italian Day on the Drive
Join us on Sunday, June 14 as we celebrate Italian Day on the Drive! We are currently looking for volunteers to help with food service, payment taking, and barbecuing. Volunteer shifts will run between 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM, with two shift options available.

We are also looking for volunteers to assist with food prep on Saturday, June 13 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

School Supplies Request from Notre Dame Student 
I am a former SFA student and current grade 11 student at Notre Dame Regional Secondary organizing a school supply donation initiative to support children who may not have access to the materials they need to learn and grow.

This project was inspired by my mother, who works in the inner city of the Surrey school district. She spoke about students who arrive at school without any supplies or do not have extra materials at home. Hearing this deeply moved me, and I felt compelled to take action.

Like many students, I received a school supply package each year and brought those items home at the end of the school year. Over time, this led to a buildup of school supplies, such as crayons, pencils, sharpeners, and scissors, that are still in good condition but no longer needed. The goal is to collect these extra supplies, clean and organize them into kits, and donate them to students who would benefit from them.

We will be collecting donations at the school office from June 8th to June 12th.

Thank you for helping me make a positive impact in our wider community.

SFA Carnival
Our School Carnival is this Sunday May 31st from 11:30 am to 3:30 pm.

Carnival tickets purchased online will be available for pick up at the gate, additional tickets will be available for purchase. A reminder that everyone over 5 will need a ticket, including volunteers.

Bike To School Week – June 1st to 5th
Get ready to ride next week!  SFA is excited to participate in Bike to School Week June 1st to 5th. Students who ride their bike to school or roll to school can lock them on the bike rack. 
We have a poster to keep track of our student participation. 
All students and families are encouraged to bike, walk and roll this year!
Prizes will be drawn on Friday for students that ride or roll to school.

Italian Day on the Drive
Join us on Sunday, June 14 as we celebrate Italian Day on the Drive! We are currently looking for volunteers to help with food service, payment taking, and barbecuing. Volunteer shifts will run between 12:00 PM – 8:00 PM, with two shift options available.

We are also looking for volunteers to assist with food prep on Saturday, June 13 from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

We are accepting transfer students for the 2026/2027 Grade 1, 4, 6 and 7 classes (current K, 3, 5 and 6). Interested families can book a school tour through our website or can apply directly online. 

Great Grandview Garage Sale
The Great Grandview Garage Sale is happening on Saturday, June 20 from 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM. We are currently looking for volunteers to help with setup of tables and tents, food and beverage service, and end-of-day cleanup and takedown.

Looking to clear out some items or showcase your small business? Tables are available to rent for $25 for anyone interested in selling their goods at the event.

Friday May 15th is Sports Day and Early Dismissal is at Noon. School Supplies Donation Appeal from SFA Alumni Catherine Bukowski
Dear Families of St. Francis of Assisi,

I am a grade 11 student at Notre Dame Regional Secondary organizing a school supply donation initiative to support children who may not have access to the materials they need to learn and grow.

Last year’s donation drive was a huge success. The children were incredibly delighted and excited to play with their new supplies.

This project was inspired by my mother, who works in the inner city of the Surrey school district. She spoke about students who arrive at school without any supplies or do not have extra materials at home. Hearing this deeply moved me, and I felt compelled to take action.

Like many students, I received a school supply package each year and brought those items home at the end of the school year. Over time, this led to a buildup of school supplies, such as crayons, pencils, sharpeners, and scissors, that are still in good condition but no longer needed.

My goal is to collect these extra supplies, clean and organize them into kits, and donate them to students who would benefit from them.

I would be incredibly grateful for your support. If your family has any extra school supplies (used or unused) that you’re willing to donate, I would love to include them in this initiative. Donations will be collected until the end of the school year.

Thank you for helping me make a positive impact in our wider community.
