CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK:
This year is a special one for the St. Francis of Assisi Community! We are celebrating the 80th anniversary of our school’s opening and the 90th anniversary of our parish church being built! It is a great time to celebrate all that Catholic education has given our families throughout the years!

We are gearing up to celebrate Catholic Schools Week next week (February 1-6, 2026).  Below details some of the themes for each day of the week and we would like to ask in particular that on Tuesday each child brings a can of soup for our “Souper Bowl”; on this day we will focus on supporting those in our community by donating cans of soup to a local charity.  Thank you!

Sunday, February 1st – Celebrate our Parish:  10:30 am Mass – All are welcome to attend. Grades 2 and 7 who will receive the sacraments are required to attend the Enrollment Mass – 10:30 am. At this Mass we ask the students come dressed in their school uniform.

Monday, February 2nd – Celebrate our Parents – We thank all our parents and guardians for their love and support.

Tuesday, February 3rd – Celebrate our Community –  We will support our community by hosting a Souper Bowl.  Students are to bring in cans of soup.

Wednesday, February 4th – Celebrate our Students – Today we celebrate our students who bring love and joy to our school.

Thursday, February 5th – Celebrate our Staff –  We thank our staff who love and care for all members of our school community.

Friday, February 6th – Celebrate our pastor, Father Lucca:  We thank Father Lucca for being our spiritual leader.

FAMILY DANCE:
Get your tickets before it’s too late! Ticket sales will end on Tuesday, February 3rd. Tickets will not be sold at the door! You can also pre-purchase food and concession tickets to avoid lines at the dance. Alcoholic beverage tickets will be available for purchase on site.

All tickets will include one free concession item! You will receive your free ticket when checking in at the dance. Stay tuned for more details next week!

If a family, after reflection, decides they better fit in the Category  2 description this past year, you may schedule a meeting with me, or simply check the Category  2 option on the re-registration form for the 2026-2027 scholastic year.

Sunday is the First Week of Advent:
The Season of Advent is a very special time in the church. During Advent, we actively prepare our hearts and minds for the birth of Christ at Christmas.  Here at school, the children will have the opportunity to participate in outreach projects. In anticipation of Christmas this short clip is a great reminder of how to prepare: “Advent in 2 minutes” https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S02KOlw7dlA

First Week of Advent: We light this candle today to remind us that Jesus is our hope – and the hope of the world. We thank God for the promises he has made to us and for the light he has brought into the world.  I encourage you to join us in prayer and reflection during this holy season of Advent. “May we spend these holy days together in prayer, penance, and hope, fixing our eyes on the appearance of Christ our Savior” @BishopBarron

Christmas Ornament:
In keeping with our annual tradition, a Christmas “ornament” was sent home with the youngest child in your family today. We would like each family to decorate a Christmas ornament to hang on our school Christmas tree. Please decorate your ornament however you wish. You may use any materials to decorate and personalize your family ornament (e.g., pictures, stickers, glitter). Don’t forget to carefully cut out your ornament and write your family name on the back. We will hole punch and tie a hanging ribbon to each ornament. Ornaments are due back by Friday, December 5th. We hope you enjoy this activity with your family.

Morning Mass:
Change to SFA Weekly Morning Mass timing effective December 1st – now 7:45 am start time (formally 8:00 am)

Catholic Outreach – Backpack Campaign:

Tis the season for giving. We are kindly asking each student to donate towards our Christmas Hampers. Please check to make sure donations are not expired. Our school is also supporting Vancouver Covenant House in their Christmas Backpack Campaign, which helps teenagers and young adults who live on the streets of Vancouver. Donations for both charities will be collected starting December 1st to December 12th. You may also send a monetary donation of $5.00, which would cover both causes. Thank you for helping brighten someone’s Christmas.

Please keep colours to: Red/Green/White/Black/Grey/Brown

Bottoms: Dark pants, If girls wish to wear skirts or dresses they need to be appropriate length and must have dark leggings underneath (no bare legs).

November – Remembrance Month:
In the Catholic Church, November is dedicated to honoring the dead and praying for the souls in purgatory. This is reflected in the calendar with All Saints’ Day on November 1st and All Souls’ Day on November 2nd, and it is a time for the faithful to pray for their deceased loved ones and for those who are otherwise forgotten. What is the difference between All Saints and All Souls? The Church set aside All Saints for all those who have died and are now in heaven. Some of these are canonized saints, but most are not. All Souls Day is for the faithful who have died, but are still in Purgatory. Our prayers help them and we are encouraged to pray, especially in the month of November. A common prayer for the dead is “Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful departed, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.” We invite you and your children to include prayers for deceased family members in our classroom daily prayer. Students are invited to bring the name(s) for whom you would like us to pray for. They can add these to their classroom prayer tables.

Remembrance Day:
On Remembrance Day, Canadians observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. on November 11th to honor and remember those who have served and sacrificed in wars and peacekeeping efforts. This tradition began with the end of the First World War at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. During this time, people pause to reflect on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women and to recognize the importance of peace. Please remember to take a moment to reflect on Remembrance Day.
